Information for General Practitioners and Specialists

For New Zealand residents the admission status depends on the area of domicile. We have contracts with several of the District Health Boards (DHB) that allow for financial support. The funding allows us to provide our services with no detrimental effect to the funding allocation within your own region.When there is a contractual arrangement there is no charge to your client for our services including:

  • Outpatient consultation with one of the specialist rheumatologists - usually required prior to admission
  • Admission
  • Treatment /provision of inpatient/daypatient/outpatient rehabilitation services
  • Accommodation (not applicable for daypatients or outpatients)
  • Meals (if admission is as a "daypatient" one midday meal only is included)

QE Health holds regional contracts with the District Health Boards of Lakes and Bay of Plenty.  These allow for direct referral from a GP.

All referrals to our service must first be approved by Dr Rodney Waterworth - visiting specialist in the Taiarawhiti District Health Board Area.

For patients living in the Waikato DHB, referrals for specialist rheumatology services should, in the first instance, be sent to Dr Alan Doube at Waikato Hospital.  The patients' needs will be assessed and the appropriate service provision, including possible admission to QE Health, will be arranged.

Contract in place.  GP to refer to Taranaki DHB in first instance for approval.


General Practitioner or Specialist

Mid-Central, Whanganui, Hawkes Bay

Includes Otaki. 
Kapiti Coast North is in Mid-Central Health whereas Kapiti Coast South is in the Capital Health area.(see below)
Funding allows for a limited number of referrals annually.

General Practitioner or Specialist

Wairarapa, Hutt, Capital, Coast,

Nelson-Marlborough

The contract specifies that people living in these sub-regions will only be accepted (as a fully funded client) where there has been a previous clinical relationship with QE Health.
Or, in special cases funded admission for rheumatology/rehabilitation services may be possible.  Enquiries should be forwarded to Dr C Rajapaske, Rheumatologist at Hutt Hospital.

Specialist (unless attended QEH previously)
West Coast, Canterbury Private (fee for service)access only No contract exists
Otago, South Canterbury, Southland Private  (fee for service) access only No contract exists

N.B. The table above refers to those individuals who wish to be referred to our services via the government funded contracts (managed by individual District Health Boards).  All of our services can be accessed on a private/fee for service basis.  

Private - all regions General Practitioner or specialist referral is required prior to medical consultation.   Charges may be claimed from an individual' s insurance company dependent on their policy.
ACC Contracts> QEH has several contractual agreements with ACC Case manager referral is required.
