Research
About
The Research unit is responsible for planning
and carrying out the research programme for QE Health.
Research activities fall into three categories:
- Industry sponsored clinical trials
- Basic research
- Applied research (including Action
Research) for QE Health service development / quality
enhancement etc.
1. Industry sponsored clinical trials:
QE Health is
involved in trialling new treatments for various forms of arthritis including
osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and also osteoporosis.
2. Basic
Research:
We initiate research programmes to understand
the individual from the four perspectives of physical, social,
cognitive (thinking) and spiritual. We then look at how each of
these areas impact on health, giving us a greater understanding
of how each person may strive to achieve optimum health. Specific
projects have included "The investigation of the role of
spirituality in health"
3. Applied Research:
Examples include
- The trialling of
new rehabilitation treatments
- The evaluation of
current treatments
- Identification of the most appropriate
measures of health for rehabilitation
What is involved?
Some of our studies require only a single blood test. Other studies
require the completion of questionnaires. The studies we conduct
on new medications are the most involved, requiring return trips
to the clinic and extensive health checks. All studies require that
a consent form be completed.
Who benefits from Research?
Study participants may (or may not) gain direct benefit from their
study treatment by way of improved pain control and fewer side effects
from their medication, and an increased understanding of their condition
and health resources. However, people who have arthritis in the
future will be the chief beneficiaries of today's research.
