Counselling
The
philosophy of the hospital stresses the importance of treating the
whole person. There is full acknowledgement of the part social,
psychological and physical factors play in regaining independence.
Our counselors are an integral part of the treatment, and are highly
experienced in dealing with the issues that arise when dealing with
chronic illness and disability.
There is acknowlegment
of the grief process which people may go through and the adjustments
that need to be made. This can often challenge people's core values
and beliefs.
The counsellors offer
both group and individual sessions and also discussions with the
family. After all there are frequently issues to address and adjustments
to make for all members of the family.
Previous strategies
for dealing with chronic conditions such as "just live with it"
have been found not to work. We therefore seek ways of helping people
gain the knowledge and power, building their strategies to understand
and to cope.
We have four members
on our counselling team.
They are also available to provide seminars and
workshops to the general public or health groups.
